This Report analyses the uptake of Copernicus Sentinel data and the performance of the Sentinel Data Access System during the period 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2022.
By the end of the reporting period, the Sentinel Data Access System was supporting over 638,000 registered users, it was publishing over 32,000 data packages per day, and users were downloading on average 234 TiB per day. At 31 December 2022, almost 776 million data packages had been downloaded by users since the start of data access operations, consisting of a total data volume of 405 PiB (78.6 PiB of which was downloaded during 2022 alone).

The Report provides the detailed statistics behind these big numbers, as well as examining the demographics of users, the status of agreements with collaborative and international partners, the challenges and solutions found by the Data Access Operations team in publishing and disseminating such huge volumes of data, and the outlook for the future.

[ESA-EOPG-CSCOP-TN-0004] Sentinel-1 IPF: Impact of the Elevation Antenna Pattern Phase Compensation on the Interferometric Phase Preservation 2015 - PDF

The Elevation Antenna Patterns (EAPs) used by the S-1 Instrument Processing Facility (IPF) are derived from the S-1 Antenna Model (AM) which is able to predict with great accuracy the gain and phase patterns.

The EAP correction by the S-1 IPF was at launch only considering the gain, similarly to what was done for ASAR. As an outcome of the S-1A Commissioning Phase, it has been decided to upgrade the S-1 IPF to also compensate for the EAP phase, in order to correct for the induced phase difference between the polarimetric channels.

This correction was introduced in March 2015 with the IPF V243. Performing interferograms between products generated with the IPFV243 and the former version V236 leads to interferometric phase variation in range.

This technical note explains the nature of the phase offset and provides recommendation towards its correction.

Performance and Data Quality Reports

Annual Reports

Yearly (or Annual) Performance Reports provide the status of Sentinel-1 instrument and (L1/L2) product performance over the years. The annual document compiles key quality indicators during the reported year, and at times further in the past, highlighting eventual observed degradation or anomalous behavior. In particular, the following aspects are discussed:

  • Instrument: antenna status, instrument temperature, internal calibration, noise power, baseline and burst synchronization

  • L1: Impulse Response Function (IRF) key parameters, radiometric calibration/validation, geometric calibration/validation, NESZ calibration/validation, Radio Frequency Interferences (RFI)

  • L2: OCN Wind (OWI) calibration/validation, OCN Swell (OSW) calibration/validation and status on the OCN Radial Velocity product (RVL), which is not yet qualified.

The annual document also highlights the list of quality disclaimers and changes in processing baseline occurring during the reported year (due to processor version change or change in auxiliary data files). Finally, lists of relevant technical documentation and instrument unavailability are also appended.

Quality Disclaimer

The quality disclaimers provide a description of product performance degradation together with information on how to identify impacted products (for example, by SAR unit, acquisition time, generation time, etc). Each disclaimer file might contain information of several products affected by the same or similar anomaly.

The quality disclaimers contain a "percentage of degradation" of the impacted products. This percentage is an empirical estimation of the level of degradation, considering that a given degradation may have different impact on different users and their specific applications. It does not necessarily relate to the amount of products degraded. The following rule of thumb is used:

  • 0 % degradation corresponds to no degradation. In fact, in that case there is no quality disclaimer.

  • 1% is a degradation on meta data that can be overcome by the user, even if it is not convenient. The integrity of data is not affected.

  • 1% can be as well a very a local degradation of the product data due to residual Radio Frequency Interference (RFI), that may prevent user to interpret the product in the affected areas. However, the presence of RFI is considered as useful information for some categories of users.

  • 33% is used for L2 OCN data which nominally have three main components (OSW, OWI and RVL). This corresponds to a degradation of one third of the data, and applies for a large degradation of one of the three components of the L2 OCN products.

  • 50% is a degradation that may impact the complete extent/coverage of the products, but not necessarily all users. For instance, the quality disclaimer 30 is on degradation of noise vector annotation, with impact on the complete coverage of the products that may impact certain applications, but not all of them.

  • 100 % degradation corresponds to a complete degradation making the product useless for any application. It that case the product is removed from Sentinel-1 product catalogue.

Certain quality disclaimers correspond to reporting of specific product degradation on a given period. For instance, invalid annotation of burst ID on TOPS SLC products on a given cycle or product products containing residual RFI in a given month. In those cases, in addition to the "percentage of degradation" field, the quality disclaimer also contains the percentage of impacted products with respect to the total number of products of same processing level in the same period.

Anomaly Database

The Sentinel-2 on-line anomaly database provides a searchable access to the list of known anomalies on Sentinel-2 products. This database includes both on-board anomalies (usually irrecoverable) and processing anomalies (potentially recoverable) and covers image data as well as metadata and format anomalies. For each anomaly, a short description and illustrations are provided and a list of datatakes, datastrips or products can be retrieved.

In addition to the search interface, this website provides an API (Application Programming Interface) for machine-to-machine access using scripts.

Besides on-board and processing anomalies, some know issues, called product features, can be present in Sentinel-2 L1C and L2A products.

This ATBD describes a procedure to derive the bi-directional water leaving radiance reflectances (RL_w) from top of atmosphere (TOA) radiance reflectance spectra RL_toa (L1b data) of the Ocean Land Colour Imager (OLCI) on Sentinel 3. The procedure is an alternative method to the standard atmospheric correction procedure for OLCI. Its main purpose is to improve the atmospheric correction over turbid and highly absorbing case 2 water and for areas of an image which are contaminated by sun glint. However, it can be applied also to case 1 water.

The Copernicus S3 Altimetry data products [NTC timeliness] shall be generated with the new NTC POE-F standard orbit products starting from the beginning of S3A cycle 38 for both S3A and S3B missions. Copernicus Sentinel-3A cycle 38 starts at 2018/11/09 – 21:57:30 with absolute orbit 14219.

Orbital Cycles

The periodic assessment of the Sentinel-3 instruments' performance is collected and made available to users by means of Data Quality Reports. Up to 2021, such reports were distributed after each satellite orbit cycle; then, after 2021, the reports were distributed on a monthly basis. Use the "Orbit cycles by year” documents to find the orbit cycle of interest given the relevant date / time.

OLCI DQR

The Data Product Quality Reports summarise the assessment of the OLCI instrument. The performance of the instrument is assessed by monitoring the radiometric and geometric calibrations, and the SNR, and by validating Level-1 and Level-2 (land and marine) products.

Each report covers a cyclic period of 27 days and the details of each Sentinel-3 orbital cycle are available. As of 16 December 2018, the reports also contain the details of Sentinel-3B cycles.

SLSTR DQR
